Entertainment & Nightlife in Iran

Nightlife, as regards to bars and clubs, is completely non-existence in Iran. Drinking alcohol is illegal, and if seen by the police, may be met with punishment. Of course, you will not find any place in Iran that openly sells alcohol. Drinking is, however, common among people especially during parties and weddings. Western music and dancing in public is also banned in Iran. In Iran, drinking and partying are done behind closed doors, so it’s best to have contacts and friends when you go over to Iran.

Tea houses are favourite local haunt for men (and less commonly families) to drink tea and puff away on a water pipe.

The best and most atmospheric cafe in Tehran must be Entracte Cafe (bohemic cafe operated by actor Leila Hatami and her husband). Ask for the traditional Iranian tea which is amazing. They serve a fantastic brunch between 11am and 2pm on Fridays and it includes sausages, normal bread and brie. It is located upstairs in a cinema on Jomhuri Avenue, just west of Vali Asr Avenue.

There is also a well-known, but small coffee shop called Hot Chocolate, in which they stock cigars and a number of European cigarettes as well. This coffee shop is on occasion, a meeting place for some of Iran's sporting elite.

In northern Tehran, just above Tajrish Square and at the beginning of a popular hiking track, is the night spot location called Darband (or Sar-e Band). It is a collection of street-side cafes and open air restaurants. In a relax atmosphere, dining on flat benches, you will be served all kinds of kababs, yoghurt drinks and dips, as well as water pipes. Almost all the restaurants serve the same quality food.
